Rajnikanth's intention of mixing Indian philosophy with mass elements is commendable. Before its release, the film had more than its share of hype and expectations. But, after seeing the film, one wonders if all that was really justified.

The film opens with the birth of Baba and he is declared to be someone almost divine and extraordinary. Baba (Rajnikanth) grows up as a Non-believer, hot-blooded guy and a Good Samaritan.
His mother (Sujatha) and his maternal uncle are ardent devotees of Baba (The real baba who who lives in Himalayas). Chamundeswari (Manisha Koirala) stays in the neighborhood of Baba and both of them fall in love.
Krishna Murthy(Asish Vidyardhi) demolishes the colony of Baba. When Baba is about to go to fight with Krishna Murthy, Baba's mother urges him to maintain calm and rebuild lost colony by working hard. Baba joins as a labor in a shop and earns money.Chamundeswari does not want baba to be a labor Baba and she tells him that she is not interested to marry a daily labor.
Then Baba realizes that love is an illusion, and at this stage, a holy-man in the guise of a beggar (Sayaji Shindae) takes him to the Himalayas. At the mountains, the saints teach him 7 mantras. These mantras have the power to make any wish come true.
Initially, Rajini is skeptic about the power of the mantras and playfully wastes some of them away. He then begins to give up his lack of faith in God and begins to transform into a Believer. His lifestyle begins to change. He uses his final mantra to create an honest, non-corrupt Chief Minister of the state. BabaRajinikant is full of undiminishing youthfulness and energy. Since he clashes directly with the 'CM' and 'Deputy CM' in the film, the dialogues are laced liberally with political overtones
Rajinikant's dance is 'the best' in the dance direction of Prabhudeva and Lawrance. His dance, his rapid dialogue deliveries and his fast paced gait are the highlights. Manisha's character does not appear as the heroine of the film. She is not given a glamorous role. But she looks beautiful.
The song 'rajjiyamaa' with AR Rehman's score gels beautifully with the story and spins magic. Rehman's music is good.
Rajinikant himself has done the story and screenplay of this film.
Rajinikant is very much into Spirituality. Rajinikant's fans are very much interested in seeing him enter into Politics.'Baba' is a coming together of both these desires.
The film moves almost along the lines of a 'God and goddess' film. The film doesn't offer a wide option in entertainment elements. So, the only entertainment factor of the film is Rajinikant and his styles alone.
