Horrors are not oftenly made in Kollywood. There are few directors who have shown courage to venture into the genre of fear. 'Kattuviriyan' is the latest
suspense thriller. The film is directed by Kalapuli G.Sekaran. Apart from direction, he has also handled story, dialogues, screenplay, music and lyrics. The
story is just a mediocre and is not convincing. Kalaipuli could have concentrated more on the script and the direction rather than music and other aspects.
But the movie has its own plus points. Some scenes are well made in 'Kattuviriyan'. Any how it is a brave attempt from Sekaran.
Ram (Ram) grows up believing that women cannot be trusted, due to his experiences of a troubled childhood after his parents' failed marriage and his
father's suicide. The incident creates a deep wound in his mind and he suspects every woman he comes across. This leads to him walking out of his
marriage that was fixed with Malavika. Years later, they happen to meet each other in a party. Now Ram is Chief Secretary and Malavika is Deputy
Commissioner. They enquire about each other's spouses and offspring.
One day, the Deputy Commissioner takes her daughter Priya (Malavika again) to Ram's house. They meet Ram's wife, who is physically-challenged, and
their daughter, an outwardly calm girl. But soon, they learn that their calm appearances were deceptive, a trick to impress them. Finally, they return with a
confirmed negative opinion about Ram. Meanwhile Malavika goes to a remote village to find the truth behind the mysterious murders that occur in an old
cottage. No villager goes near it in fear of getting killed. The Deputy Commissioner decides to solve the mystery, but gets killed even before the
investigation takes off. Now Priya takes off her mother's mission. What happens hereafter is to be seen on the screen.
Performances: Malavika is a brilliant actress. She appears in a dual role for the first time. Her performance is good for both the roles. Dr
Ram, a surgoen by profession, makes his debut as hero with this film. He is alright throughout. The chemistry between Ram and Malavika is fine. King
Kong tries his hand at comedy but could not pull it off effectively. Ditto with Sekaran. The other artistes are simply wasted. Music by Sekaran is just a
mediocre. Neither the song picturization nor the choreography attracts the youth. The basic story could be better. Narration is adequate. Some unwanted
sequences make the plot confusing. The other aspects are okay.
