A social messaged movie, Kathavarayan is directed by Salangal Durai. The film casts Karan, Vidisha in the lead. A good music is
presentsd by Srikanth Deva and released on Silver Jubilee Films's banner.
A tale with a message, the film is about Kathavarayan (Karan) who is well known for two things illicit liquor and then for his very kind and
helpful nature. All this happens in the busy village of Hogenakkal and Kathavarayan makes a mark for himself with his business and his
gestures. However, things take a turn when an N.S.S team arrives as part of their project and one among them happens to be the slender
and beautiful Malathi (Vidisha), her sole aim in life is to end the arrack menace and bring the wrongdoers to justice. Her eyes fall on
Kathavarayan and from then on she goes on a fact finding mission to get Kathavarayan behind bars. Finally, she succeeds in her mission
and Kathavarayan is taken into custody and sent to prison in Chennai. Few others who are in the business are also held with Malathi's
initiative and as expected she becomes the target for them. They get their due when Malathi is framed in a false case of drug possession
and she is sent to jail as a drug peddler. Meanwhile, Kathavarayan comes out of prison and is seeking blood of Malathi for what she did to
him but then when he hears her story and also discovers the true means of her objective, he sets out on a rescue mission by joining the
baddies and making his way to the main villain. How he does that forms the rest of the story.
Perfarmanse:
The subject has been chosen with a simple and strong message that folks must stay away from doing drugs and alcohol. The presentation
was apt and the narration of it is worth accepting but then not much happened in the camera and music departments as few shots were
visually disturbing and music was blaring at unwanted situations. The script was intact but the screenplay could have been better. Karan
has come out with a good performance and has shown enough shades as a liquor vendor and also as a changed man. Vidisha who made
her debut in Tamil has come out with a strange but stimulating sensuality and has shown a lot of promise for the future. Vadivelu as always
was the show stealer with his set of comedy track while others like Alex, Kadhal Dhandapani and others did their job with ease and
delivered decent performances.
Conclusion:
The film needs to be commended for its approach towards the subject and also for conveying a very useful message to the masses but
then concentrating on the moral issue was so high that it has lost the ingredients which are required to make a film complete. While the
first half brings about few twists and turns, the second half becomes more predictable and songs were filled just to make up for the time
gap. If looked at in the right sense, the movie has a lot to carry home but then the format of presentation should have been improvised to
make it more appealing and impact creating to the audience.
