Amidst run of the mill love themes and implausible action, Duet Movies' "Azhagiya Theeyae ... " comes as a whiff of fresh air. A simple storyline neatly narrated, the film is ably backed by Viji's dialogue. The comic digs, light-hearted barbs and humorous verbal exchanges in this breezy romantic story, keep your spirits enlivened. Radha Mohan makes an impressive debut with his story, screenplay and direction.

Story
The story unfolds in a flashback. Chandran (Prasanna), Chitthapa, Moorthy and Puyal are four friends and the common factor which binds them together is Tamil Films. They live in the terrace of Chettiar's house in a small room. They are desperate to make ends meet Chandran's dream is to become a big director, Moorthy aspires to be an actor, Chtthappa is fond of writing humour stories and he wants get into that line. Puyal falls for all the girls who he meets. Film industry goes on strike and the four friends do odd jobs like becoming a cartoon caricatures in MGM, Cooking at marriages etc. A friend of Chandran comes with a request to bail out Nandhini (Navya Nair) daughter of a tyrant father (Pyramid Natarajan) from a marriage with a software engineer Aravind (Prakash Raj) she does not like. Chandran devises a plan and acts as Nandhini's lover and stops Aravind from marrying Nandhini. Aravind starts a liking for Chandran and the story takes a twist here. He gets the couple married at the registrar's office and Nadhini'd father throws her out of the house. Aravind presents a new apartment and an upset Chandran and Nandhini starts living in the same apartment. It starts as a friendship, which soon turns to love for Chandran but Nandhini still treats him as only a friend. Chandran gets an offer to turn director and Nandhini gets a job in Bangalore. Whether Nandhini realizes Chandran's love and whether they unite at the end forms the rest of the story.
Music
Ramesh Vinayakam's music is impressive. Ramba and Abbas dancing to the "Dil Mera ... " song has been very differently captured.

Performance
Prasanna has given a remarkable performance. His humorous scenes are excellent. Navya Nair as the heroine passes muster. Jayavarma plays his part well. So does Bala. But the best was Kumaravel. As a comedy storywriter he had you in splits. Prakash Raj exceled in his in his brief role. M. S. Bhaskar. as the house owner was super.
